How to create a strong password you can actually remember
To create a strong password, make it long, unique and unrelated to you. A few unrelated words beat a short mix of symbols.
What you need
- A minute to pick the password
- A password manager or a safe place to keep it
Make it long first
Length protects a password better than odd symbols do. Every extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs. Aim for at least 14 characters for an account you care about.
Use a passphrase of unrelated words
Pick four or more words that have nothing to do with each other and join them with a separator. The pattern looks like word-word-word-word-number. It is easy to type and hard to guess.
That is a pattern, not a password: never copy an example you have seen, and choose your own words.
Use one password per service
When one site leaks its passwords, attackers try the same email and password on other services. If every account has its own password, one leak stays one leak.
Never reuse a password, not even with a small change such as a new number at the end.
Let a password manager remember them
A password manager creates and stores a different long password for every account, and you only remember one strong master passphrase. The one on your phone or in your browser is better than a notebook that others can read.
Avoid what attackers try first
Do not use your name, your date of birth, a pet’s name, the part of your email before the @, keyboard runs such as qwerty, or words such as password. Do not store a password in a note on the same phone without a lock.
Check the VITON ID rules
A VITON ID registration password has 10 to 128 characters, at least one letter and one digit, and it must not contain your first or last name or the name part of your email address. Obvious strings such as password or qwerty are rejected too.
Signing in uses your email and password. Email codes are for registration and password recovery, and changing a password signs out your other sessions. You can set or change it in your VITON ID.
VITON13 never asks for your password or a verification code by chat, email or phone. If someone asks, do not send it.
