Payment pending: what a pending transaction means

A payment pending line is a hold, not a final charge: your bank has reserved the amount but the shop has not collected it yet. Here is how to read it.

What you need

  • The banking app or statement that shows the pending line
  • Your order number, if the payment belongs to an order
  1. Understand what “pending” means

When you pay by card, the shop first asks the bank to authorise the amount. The bank reserves it and shows it as pending. Only later does the shop settle the charge, and the line becomes a normal posted payment.

So a pending line is an authorised hold. The money has left your available balance, but it has not necessarily been taken yet.

  2. Give it a few days before you act

A pending hold usually either becomes a final charge or drops off by itself within a few days. How long it takes is decided by your bank and the payment network, so ask your bank rather than guessing.

Meanwhile do not pay again for the same order just because the available balance went down. Check first whether the first attempt is still pending.

  3. Read the details of the line

Note the merchant name, the amount, the currency and the date. The merchant name can show the name of the payment provider instead of the shop, and a foreign currency can show a slightly different amount once the bank converts it.

Take a screenshot of the line and hide your card number before you share it with anyone.

  4. Match the line to an order

To tie a payment to an order you need five things: the order number, the date, the amount, the currency and the payment reference from your receipt or the provider’s message. An order number alone is not a payment receipt.

At VITON13 checkout saves an order request, and the route and the final total are confirmed for the order before money moves. If you see a pending line and no confirmed payment route, ask us before assuming it belongs to an order.

  5. Ask the right party

Your bank can tell you whether a hold is still active and when it will be released. VITON13 can tell you whether a payment was matched to your order.

Write to us with the order number, date, amount, currency and reference. Do not send a full card number, a security code or a verification code.

A pending payment is not a refund and not a confirmed order payment. If a hold stays for longer than your bank says it should, ask the bank to explain it in writing.
