Payment declined: why it happens and what to do next

A payment declined message usually means your bank refused the charge, and the cause is often a detail you can fix. Check the reasons below in order.

What you need

  • The card you tried to pay with
  • Your banking app or the phone number on the back of the card
  1. Check the card number, expiry date and name

The most common reason is a typing slip: one wrong digit, an old expiry date, the wrong security code or a billing address that does not match what the bank holds. Enter the details again slowly instead of using autofill.

Also check that the card has not been replaced. A reissued card often has a new number and a new expiry date even when the bank account stays the same.

  2. Look at your balance, limits and online settings

The next causes are an insufficient balance and a daily or monthly spending limit. Open your banking app and compare the amount with what is available, not with the total balance.

Many banking apps also have switches for online payments and for payments abroad. If either one is off, the bank declines the charge automatically. Switch it on and try again.

  3. Confirm the 3-D Secure code

For online payments the bank often asks you to approve the charge with a code in an SMS or with a confirmation in its app. If the code never arrived, expired or was entered on the wrong screen, the payment ends as declined.

Check that your phone number at the bank is current, wait for the message and finish the confirmation before the page times out.

  4. Ask the bank about a fraud block or a network limit

Banks block payments that look unusual: a new shop, a foreign payee, a larger amount than usual. Call the number on the back of the card or write in the banking app, ask for the reason for the refusal and ask the bank to allow the payment.

Some cards simply do not work in some payment networks or countries. A Russian card used with a foreign payment provider is a typical example, and the reverse is true for a foreign card on a Russian page. In that case no retry helps, and another route is the fix.

  5. Check whether you were charged before you pay again

A declined payment can still leave a temporary hold on the card. Look at the pending operations in your banking app and wait until the first attempt is clearly cancelled or clearly paid. Paying twice for the same order is the mistake that costs money.

If you see a pending line you do not understand, the pending payment guide explains what it is and how to match it to an order.

  6. Choose another payment route

At checkout VITON13 offers a Russian card or SBP (MIR, SberPay, T-Pay), an international card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express), PayPal, a personal payment link in Telegram and cryptocurrency. Checkout saves an order request, and the route and the final total are confirmed for your order before any money moves.

If one route keeps failing, write to us with the order number and the route you tried, and we can confirm another one.

Card details are entered on the payment provider’s page and never reach VITON13. Never send a full card number, a security code, a password or a verification code to support.
